2. Analyze Dr. Stockmann's motivation in revealing the truth about the polluted springs. Selfish or unselfish motives? Explain.

- Well, the analysis of Doctor Stockmann’s motivation in revealing the truth about the polluted springs can honestly go either way. You can look at it as him being both selfish and unselfish. The reasoning behind my unorthodox take on Doctor Stockmann’s motives has to do with the fact that everyone has a selfish reason behind doing something. There is always an agenda, there is always a motive. Even though it was pretty clear throughout the story that Doctor Sotckmann was going about his business of sabotaging the polluted springs for the good of the people, but, by understanding human nature and its usual tendencies, I can see right through his actions. He probably thought to himself that he could kill two birds with one stone. Have the springs closed and or cleaned up, and have his name go down in history as the do gooder genius who solved the big bad problem. For more evidence towards my claim, look at his arrogance. Analyze his attitude. Would you really put it past him to have a double motive? Obviously everything works out well in the end, but, it only proves that he was both selfish and unselfish motives, ultimately making him selfish. I guess I could revise my initial statement and say his motives were selfish.

  1. I think your right about his intentions, they were unselfish at first. As i said in an earlier comment, I "also believe that when someone tells them self enough and says that they are not selfish, that they will believe it. His intentions were unselfish, but i think that what he told himself to make himself seem more prominent. However, the underlying problem was that he wanted to status and the power from which he would receive from his 'righteous' act." I see where you are coming from with both sides of the selfish vs unselfish aspect. And also 1+1=2 meaning selfish+unselfish still ='s selfish, it the only was it adds up. No matter how many positive work one does, one negative aspect is tied in, and their reputation goes down. Negative side effects if you will stick longer and people loose trust much much faster. So therefore, he may have wanted good for his community, but because of the turn to his underlying selfish needs, he got a bad rap.

  2. Vincent,
Nice post! I do agree that it could go either way. A lot of your classmates felt the same way. Good use of support and nice picture of the doctor. Don’t forget to cite it next time though. Keep up the good work
