Research a famous whistleblower not mentioned in this lesson.

Cynthia Cooper and her team unraveled the fraud at WorldCom, which is the largest corporate fraud in history. The company in Clinton, Miss. had been classifying operating costs as capital expenditures, and inflating its profits. Cynthia Cooper went to the auditing committee of WorldCom's board in June 2002 and told them that the company had been using suspect accounting practices. Within that week, WorldCom admitted to accounting more than 3.9 million dollars. In 2002, she was named one of Times Magazine’s People of the Year. She has written a book called Extraordinary Circumstances.
This whistleblower is similar to Dr. Stockmann in Enemy of the People, because like Dr. Stockmann, Cynthia Cooper did a lot of research to find her discovery. In the story Enemy of the People, on page 1005, Dr. Stockmann says “I had a suspicion about it a long time ago- last year there were too many sick cases among visitors.” This shows that he has been researching for the past year. Cynthia Cooper would often work long hours at night with her team to discover the fraud at WorldCom.

  1. Great job, Cynthia Cooper is a whistleblower that really relates to Dr. Stockmann. I'm sure it was not easy for her to be a part of something that was doing something wrong, but it did help her story to get background information and documents. I think it was a good idea to incorporate a quote from the Enemy of the People, a very nice touch.
