Matt Goldberg Blog Post 2

Wordle: Untitled

Research a famous whistleblower not mentioned in this lesson. Summarize briefly who this person was and why this person was a whistleblower.

Compare and contrast this person to the whistleblower from Enemy of the People, Dr. Stockmann.

The famous whistleblower who I choose to research was Christoph Meili. I came across his name on a list of famous whistleblowers and his story seemed to be quite interesting. Christoph Meili was a night guard for a the Swiss bank Schweizerische Bankgesellschaft who discovered some distrubing things happending within the bank. He noticed that the bank was destroying Jewish credit balances which were owed to familes of the victims of the Holocaust. Christoph Meili risked his job and life inorder to release the information to the public. Although it is agaisnt the law to remove bank files, he took them home and handed them over to a Jewish orginization who later gave the information to the police. At first the Swiss police arrested Christoph because they claimed banking secrecy had been damaged, but Christoph was able to escape to the United States were he was granted Political asylum and the warrent removed. To this day he is the only swiss person to recieve political asylum. Christoph is a whistleblower because he risked his on life to help other peoples lives. He did what was right even though heknew it might be dangerous. Meili and Stockmann are in common because they bothed found somthing disturbing and released i to the public hoping that it would help. They are uncommon because Meili's case was a little different in the way that the law got involoved and more then 1 country was involoved. In Stockmann's case it only involved a small town and deblt with pollution rather then banking issues.

  1. I like your post. I like that you picked someone that isn't well known. I also liked that you went beyond and included details as to why they're different as well. However, I think you should have given more detail about their similarities. But overall I think you did a great job.

  2. Matt,
Great choice of whistleblower, I have never heard of Christopher Meili’s story before. I thought it was helpful that you gave a brief synopsis of Meili’s story. The deatials weren’t too much or too little it was just enough information to fully understand how Meili and Dr. Stockmann were related. I did think you could have included more when comparing the two. I felt the point the of assignment was to really analyze their stories, it might of helped to find more than one similarity and more than one difference. Over all the aspects of each person you chose to mention were dead on in that both Meili and Dr. Stockmann risked everything to help others.

I think his story is amazing and I agree with you that he completely risked his life, but definitely did the right thing.

  4. I enjoyed the wordle and how you researched further on someone you had never heard of. It seems like you really took something away from the lesson. Next time make sure to go back and read over your blog for grammar and spelling! Nice job overall!
