2. Analyze Dr. Stockmann's motivation in revealing the truth about the polluted springs. Selfish or unselfish motives? Explain.

In An Enemy of the People the character Dr.Stockman finds out from studying the springs in his town that they are polluted. Instantly after he found this out he went to the newspaper in order to alert the people of his town. In my opinion you could view it from either way, him reporting it to the newspaper could have been him been selfish or unselfish motives. You can view it as being selfish because Dr. Stockmann could have just wanted to get the information published to compete with his brother, and try to gain power within the community. But then again you could also look at it as being unselfish and simply as Dr. Stockmann trying to warn the community that the springs are polluted and you should stay away from them until they are fixed. When news is published sometimes the people take it the wrong way and talk low of the person responsible for its publishing. I personally think Dr. Stockman was trying to impress the community but he should have taken the news not to the newspaper but to a source that could fix the pollution before anyone could freak out.

  1. Good, but I need evidence from the play itself to back up your motivation theory.

  2. I like how you gave both sides that hit could have selfish or unselfish but you need to back it up with evidence from the text

  3. Matt,
I agree you could view it either way. It is tough to really say whether Dr. Stockmann was totally selfish or unselfish with how he chose to handle the situation.
