“They Came By night”
Setting: A stormy Halloween night with the streets abandoned Susie and Jessica are the only ones who are determined enough to walk the dark streets to retrieve candy. Many houses are dark, but some have candy bowls out for those who wish to stop by. Susie is dressed in a scary kitty cat outfit with heels, while Jessica is dressed as a cheerleader. The wind is blowing so hard that it is making a whistling noise.

Title: “They Came By night”
Music: organ playing and the sound of trees moving in the cold wind
Announcer: Good evening. It's that time again for 5 Minutes of Horror, the radio show that will chill your soul and rattle your minds. Sit back and don't relax.
Music: loud organ playing
Narrator: It is about 8 o’clock in the evening. Billy and his girlfriend Jen decided to do a favor for Billy’s parents of watching his little sister Sarah while they went to a work party. The trees are thrashing, the thunder and lightning are crashing one after the other and it looks as if a storm is about to brew. As if this was a sign that something bad was about to happen. But you might be wondering what could it be? Only time will tell…
Sarah: Billy I’m scared!
Billy: Oh don’t worry about it you big baby. It’s only a little thunder storm.
Jen: Billy don’t you think you should be a little nicer to your sister. She’s only 5 years old ya know.
Billy: OK OK I’m sorry. Hey you girls want to watch a movie?
Sarah: yes!
Jen: Yes!
Billy: Ok, let’s watch a scary movie. I think tonight is the perfect night don’t you think?
Jen: I don’t know Billy. I don’t think a scary movie is really appropriate of a young child.
Sarah: No I’m ok, I’m a big girl.
Narrator: Jen, Billy and Sarah are all sitting in front of the TV with a big bowl of popcorn in their hands. As the movie begins to play, the sound of thunder coming from outside sounds as if it is getting louder and louder.
Sarah: I don’t know if I want to keep watching anymore.
Jen: I think I’m going to help put Sarah to bed Billy if that’s ok?
Billy: sure, I don’t care.
Jen: common’ Sarah lets go get your pajamas on.
Sarah: Ok
Music: Organ playing
Narrator: As Jen walks up the stairs with Sarah by her side, the stairs begin to creek with each step that is taken. You can hear the wind whistling through the cracks of the front door. Twenty minutes go by and there is still no sign of Jen walking back down the stairs.
Billy: Hey Jen where are yah?
No answer
Billy: (he screams louder) JEN!?
Still no answer
Narrator: Billy begins to walk towards the stair case and hears footsteps coming from the top. But to his dismay, it wasn’t Jen who was walking. But if it wasn’t Jen then who could it be?
Music: Loud organ playing in the background as well as the sound of the storm from outside.

ANNOUNCER: Listen now as 5 MINUTES OF HORROR brings you Megan's terrifying story,
"They Came By Night"!
**Set in late 1800s America; the plains**
*Soft piano music-higher octave*
Announcer: Asa is a common American farmer with an unusual problem: his home that he had built with his own two hands…was haunted…supposedly.
*Silence*
Announcer: Asa does not believe his family’s stories, and considers them foolish figments of imagination. His family, too, knew…he would never believe…
*Tantalizing music continues-high octave*
*Sound of an axe hitting wood strikes*
Asa was carrying a bundle of wood he has freshly chopped for the chilly evening, and was walking to the front porch, when Eliza—his youngest daughter—dashed out the door. Her dress and blonde hair followed, whipping behind her.
“Father, she was there again! In my room!” Eliza said, grabbing onto his trousers in fright. Asa gave a chuckle, but stopped soon, seeing the true fear on his eight-year-old daughter’s face. He consoled her (many would say dismissed) and continued into the house and to the fireplace.
Eliza stared after her father, and then turned her gaze to her bedroom window…
*Quick, quiet strike of violins*
That night, the dinner table was quiet. Asa was eating without a care in the world, dipping his hand-cut bread in his soup. Behind him was a photograph (Asa knew they were lucky to have had a family photograph from the new cameras being developed). In the picture, was a younger-looking Asa with his wife and children, who also appeared younger—Eliza was just a baby in her mother’s arms.
In the background, stood their house, freshly built years ago when Asa had finished. However, if one was bothered to look closer, there faintly appeared to be someone in the black and white background. However, these photographs were often distorting…
*Sound of leaves on a windy night*
Asa looked up from his meal. “Yes, Eliza?” he asked amused at his daughter, who was staring at him.
“Hmm?” Eliza visually snapped out of her trance. “Nothing, father,” she said, quickly, before eating her peas.
Eliza had not been looking at her father at all. She had been staring at the photograph behind her father’s head. She had done so since she was small, and it always gave her a chilling feeling. She was too short to see the photograph up close, but some meals at the table were usually spent looking.
There was something about that photo, to Eliza—something uneasy in the way everyone looked against the backdrop of their home. It did not look welcoming to her, which was completely opposite of her mother’s feelings on the matter. She didn’t share her feelings to her parents, or even her siblings. They would never believe her. Her father already didn’t.
*Slow strings—quiet, then rising in volume*
The ten times she has seen the woman, the one in the white dress and pale complexion, she got frightened. More than she ever had before. Her blood itself seemed to turn to ice, like on a winter’s day. Because that woman didn’t live here. But she was there the day that picture was taken. And sometimes she visited at night.
*Wind stops into silence*
Asa dropped his spoon to his plate and got up, moving out of the way while his wife, Virginia, started to clear the table. The wind blew harder outside, lowering the temperature to a toe-biting chill. Asa walked to the fireplace, adding some bundles of wood to the flames. The fire reflected eerily off of the wooden walls tonight. But only Eliza seemed to take notice.
It was getting late, and Eliza and her brother and sister were shooed to bed. Laying in her bed, trying to look through the inky darkness, Eliza finally heard it.
*Creak of wood*
She stilled in her bed…as did her breathing, which no longer came.
*Silence*
Eliza got up, her bare feet seemingly frozen in place. She peeked out her bedroom door, and looked out. Nothing.
She let out a breath, and lay back in bed, eventually falling asleep. She was just overreacting…
Later, in the next room, Asa was awoken by a noise.
*Light footsteps are heard by the door*
Asa looks and sees nothing. He looks at his wife, who is sleeping peacefully, and lets out a breath. He lay back down.
*Footstep*
Lying on his side, Asa’s eyes snap back open. ‘There’s someone there.’
He slowly lowers his arm down the side of the bed, where he keeps his pistol. But before he can lay his fingers on it, the blanket covering him moves at the end of the bed.
*Loud orchestral & violin strike*
His body jerks in fear as a clammy, cold hand wraps his right ankle in a death grip.
Asa lets out a raspy yell and swings his head towards the end of the bed, where he stares into the pale, unknown eyes of the woman in the photograph.
*Dead silence*

MUSIC: Creepy/Suspenseful Intro Theme
NARRATOR: Paul and Jessica Smith have just finished moving into their new home. It is an old Victorian style manor, with a sprawling lawn and a wall around the property. Surrounding the wall, and in some areas growing over and inside it, is a forest. The trees all look old and weathered, with dull obsidian bark and crimson leaves. When they had first seen the house, Paul had taken an instant liking to it and decided that this was the house they would buy. This liking stems from Paul’s love for horror stories, and he thought the house looked like something right out of such a story. Paul is sitting on one of the recently unpacked recliners while Jessica finishes putting away some odds and ends.
JESSICA: I’m glad we were able to get all the boxes and furniture inside today, it looks like it might rain tonight.
NARRATOR: Paul glances out the window at the sky. Swirling black clouds block out the stars, and the small beams of light from the full moon that manage to break through give the forest a hauntingly surreal and blighted look.
PAUL: This is great; it’s like being on the set of a horror movie.
JESSICA: Oh, I wish you would stop with all that talk of horror movies, you know I hate them. This place is so creepy; couldn’t we have chosen a different house? What about that lovely little house over on Wessington Street?
PAUL: Lighten up, it’s now like all those monsters are real or anything, it’s all just smoke and mirrors. Just the imagination of some Hollyw ...
SOUND: “AAHWOOOOOOOO” - a loud howl.
NARRATOR: The long, baleful howl cut off whatever Paul was about to say and made Jessica whimper in fright.
JESSICA: OH MY GOD, Paul, there’s something out there!
PAUL: Now calm down, it was just the wind blowing through the trees. There is nothing out there, look, I’ll prove it.
NARRATOR: Paul gets up and heads for the door.
SOUND: Floorboards creaking, footsteps, and then the creak of a door opening.
MUSIC: Suspenseful.
JESSICA: Paul, get back in here and lock the door right this minute.
NARRATOR: Jessica is now standing in the doorway, illuminated from behind, as Paul walks out onto the night-shrouded grounds. Paul turns to look back at Jessica, a small smile gracing his lips.
Paul: See, there is nothing out here to be afraid of.
JESSICA: AAAAAAAAAHHHH!
NARRATOR: As Jessica lets out a horror-driven scream, a massive shape looms up out of the darkness behind Paul. There is a flash of white, and the light of the moon briefly peaks through the clouds to illuminate a spray of crimson. Golden eyes turn on Jessica.
SOUND: Screams!

“They Came By night”
Music: soothing violins
Setting: In East Tennessee 1959, David a young man from Knoxville, home for the holidays happens to stumble upon an old rusty carving knife that was given to him when he was a child.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/71/OpinelKnife_open.jpg/300px-OpinelKnife_open.jpg
David shocked to see the knife was still where he left all those years ago. As he fiddled with the knife there was a knock on the door (boom boom boom), causing him to accidentally sliced part of his finger. (music stops briefly)
David> What the hell ma! Ya bout scared the pants off of me!
Davids mother> davy! What in gods name did ya do to yourself!
David> nothing ma! I’ll be fine, leave me be please.
Mother> suit yourself, ya best get cleaned up before supper, it will be ready soon and ya know how your father gets when he is hungry and has to wait on people.
(Mother exits)
Music: quite melody or reminiscent music is playing
Bleeding from the laceration, his thoughts drifted back to the day when this knife saved his life.
Setting: It was 1950 the night of his eighteenth birthday. In those days when a boy turns eighteen he is no longer a boy, and that means he has manly responsibilities.
As the Lennen family was sitting around their dinner table Mr. Lennen, Davids father game him that knife it had been passed down for many generations. It was tradition that the eldest male in the family received it in his eighteenth birthday. David embraced the gift he longed for as a child. It was finally his! He was finally a man in his father’s eyes. It was also tradition to go on a father son camping trip. So the Lennen boys packed their gear and headed out towards the banks of the Chatahoochie the best spot for fishing.
It was dusk, this time of the year it seems like the sun takes forever to set. David and his father reach the Chatahoochie and make camp just before night fall.
Music: crickets are chirping, the fire is cracking and the wind is blowing through the great oak trees.
It is getting late and the fire is starting to die down. David is lulled into a drowsy state of awareness by the warmth of the fire.
Suddenly a loud shriek similar to that of an Indian war cry echoes through the forest AYhAYhAYhAYhAYhAYhAYhEEEE!
David> PA! did you hear that! I thought their hunting season wasn’t until-
Cut off by his father
Mr. Lennen>hush son…be still
Music: the sound of whispers and breaking twigs were getting closer and closer
